From combining words and an image to create a single-panel gag to telling a compelling story from start to finish with a sequence of panels, this course is an introduction to the principles of sequential storytelling found in comics, manga, and graphic novels for visual storytellers ages 10 -16. Through a blend of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, students will learn the vocabulary and anatomy of the comic panel, panel layout, drawing & inking techniques, as well as story structure and flow. By the end of this course, students will apply all concepts and techniques learned to produce their very own comic.
Meet the Artist
Rachel Cooley is an award-winning, NJ-based visual artist, animator, and storyboard artist. One frame at a time, Rachel is committed to bringing compelling stories and narratives to life by combining her unique visual style, technical knowledge of filmmaking, and high level draftsmanship. No matter the medium – illustration, graphic narrative, animation- the goal is effective communication, audience connection, and thought provocation.
In addition to being an independent animator and visual artist, Rachel has a deep passion for teaching, mentorship, and making high-level arts education affordable and accessible. Receiving her BA in Art & Biology from Hamilton College in 2018, Rachel specializes in traditional 2D media and rendering techniques in drawing and painting. In 2023, Rachel received her Masters in Fine Arts in Animation in 2023 from the UCLA School of Theater, Film, & Television specializing in 2D animation.
