The Hunterdon Art Museum is pleased to announce wildlife painter Douglas Allen will be speaking about his illustrious career of almost seventy years with gallerist, Robert Sullivan. The conversation will encompass Allen’s formative years, his plein-air painting of big game and travels in nature among other topics. The talk concludes with the artist signing copies of his book In Nature’s Realm, a volume of over 200 pages with more than 175 detailed images of Allen’s original paintings and drawings.
Copies will be available for purchases at the museum. Allen will also have a small number of original artworks for sale. Beneduce Vineyards is curating a sampling of varietals for tasting to be matched with a complementary food pairing.
For almost seventy years, Douglas Allen has been painting big game animals in his unique style of contemporary realism which renders his subjects and their surroundings in meticulous detail. Allen’s career began in 1959, at the age of 24 when he was selected by “Outdoor Magazine” to illustrate a series of articles written by Jack O’Connor. A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Doug Allen studied at the Ford Art School in his hometown.
He later studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. Allen’s career has taken him all over the world to paint his subjects in their natural habitats including the Great Plains, the American West, the Canadian Rockies and later, Zimbabwe.
Douglas Allen has illustrated numerous books for leading publishing houses like Harper and Row, Alfred Knopf and Harbourt-Brace, among others. His art was frequently seen in magazines such as Outdoor Life, Reader’s Digest and National Wildlife. He also authored the book “N.C. Wyeth, The Collected Illustrations, Paintings and Murals.” Tickets are available for sale at $25 – seating is limited.
