This workshop is part of a series of programs offered as part of our 250th celebration of contemporary crafts, called Mill to Mill.

What makes embroidery radical? Using decorative stitching to create an image conveying social or political justice. Learn how artists have used stitching and textiles to get their messages heard and choose your own image/message to hand stitch an art piece to take home, suitable for framing.

Learn how to use different embroidery stitches and fabric applique in a variety of decorative ways. Your radical embroidery will be created with pearl cotton and/or embroidery floss, fabric scraps, markers and a needle. No stitching experience required. All supplies included.

Teens 14-17 welcome with a parent/guardian.

Participants will have the opportunity to take home a peace flag to decorate with radical embroidery or other materials to contribute to the Mill to Mill Peace Flag Project.

Meet the Artist

Susan Bleignier is a textile artist, painter and educator. Her work includes hand stitching repurposed fabric inspired by nature and happy things. Texture and color are a huge part of her art aesthetic. She sews wool flowers, trees and scrappy fabric collages using found bits and pre loved textiles. She values individuality and believes perfection is boring and wonky is where it’s at! She has a passion for sharing art making with her high school students, at workshops in an arts based camp in Maine, and at local art markets.
