This 3-day workshop for making and firing ceramic work will take place at the Toshiko Takaezu Ceramic Studio and property, which includes a beautiful garden and welcoming studio space. It will take place over two consecutive weekends.
This workshop will focus on building confidence with simple hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, & slabbing. Getting comfortable with these elementary modes of working allows for the free expression of ideas. Instead of focusing on products, whether functional vessels or sculptural forms, emphasis will be on the fundamental building processes themselves. From thumbprints to scrapes to dimpled and warped facades, we will explore how structure & surface interact and inform one another. We will also explore ways of exploiting simple glaze effects.
This class is recommended to any level of familiarity with clay: fundamentals are for everyone.
The first two day weekend will be spent building clay forms.
The subsequent single-day weekend will be spent glazing our work.
Attendee’s pieces will be fired shortly thereafter and can be picked up at their convenience in the following days and weeks.
Please note: There is an additional $150 firing and materials fee that must be paid to the Toshiko Takaezu Studio on the first day of the workshop.
